About Courtney

About Courtney
Courtney is, first and foremost, a lover of story telling, self-expression, discovery, courage and finding beauty in peculiar places.

Courtney is dedicated to sharing her passion with others, teaching voice for six years. Courtney studied voice at Memorial University’s School of Music (2008 – 2009) with Shelley Neville and Caroline Schiller. Courtney has since studied and collaborated with Meghan Herder (2011 – 2014). In 2010, Courtney received the most precious gift life has given her to date--a beautiful, healthy baby girl. Becoming totally inspired by her daughter Mia, she decided to become a Kindermusik educator and taught for 3 years. She has since moved on and developped her own performance program for young singers, as well as an introduction to music class called Musical Me. Courtney recently wrote the script for "Not Myself Today", a pop musical for youth written to raise awareness for mental health. Courtney is now juggling life as a full-time business owner, performer, teacher, wife and mom. She is a singer/songwriter with a focus in Pop/Folk and Musical Theatre, and is self taught in guitar, piano, and ukulele.

Teaching Philosophy
I believe everyone, at any age, can sing.
I believe in creating a healthy voice through correct posture, proper breathing techniques and releasing unnecessary tension.
I believe music teaches discipline, courage and self expression. Music can be therapeutic, cathartic and stress relieving. I believe through music we can learn how to be confident, expressive, empathetic people.
I believe that theatre and improv can teach you skills that you will carry with you for the rest of your life. They help you connect with your peers. They build confidence in your ideas. You learn to compromise, use empathy, and build on team working skills. They teach quick thinking, adaptibility, creativity and courage. They improve public speaking skills, stage precense and self-confidence.
I believe in community, building up our peers through positive reinforment, friendships and encourangement. I believe in creating a safe, fun environment where the student feels open to expressing themselves and being their truest, most creative self.
I believe that performing in a group can help one’s self esteem and performance anxiety.
I believe in connecting with each student personally to find different ways they learn to better serve them. I believe in letting students choose music they enjoy, as long as it is challenging and appropriate.

I believe in continual growth as a teacher. Working with other musicians can help you grow as a musician, which is why I try to perform as often as I can, and encourage my students to do the same.
